Konkel publishes new ground-breaking research

Department of Genetics and Biochemistry assistant professor and member of the Center for Human Genetics Dr. Miriam Konkel is part of a team of scientists that have produced the most complete and accurate look at the human genome to date, even in regions that have long been considered too complex to resolve.

“The greatest advancement in this work is that we can get into these really difficult regions and build the structure and show the genetic variation within them, and now investigate how they are contributing to phenotypes or disease,” said Dr. Konkel.

The team of 65 individuals, making up the Human Genome Structural Variation Consortium, represent a variety of the world’s populations. The team assembled near-complete genomes, advancing the scientific exploration of complex genetic structural variation.

Detailed findings were published in the scientific journal Nature in an article titled, “Complex genetic variation in nearly complete human genomes.”

Sriya Pothapragada: Ph.D. student and skydiver

The Greenville Journal released an article highlighting genetics doctoral student Sriya Pothapragada’s love for both her studies and skydiving.

Sriya arrived at Clemson after in 2023 after majoring in bioengineering at the University of Maryland to study with Dr. James Lewis and obtain her Ph.D. Sriya’s research revolves around evolutionary genetics and biology with the hope of eventually applying it to a career as an astrobiologist.

When she arrived in the Upstate she also had a goal to obtain her first skydiving license.

“I value almost equally the skills you get from stuff like skydiving, especially in flying, like self-accountability, discipline, common sense,” she said. “My reflexes have gotten better. I’m in better physical shape.”

So far, Pothapragada has completed 61 jumps and recently competed in the USPA National Collegiate Skydiving Championships in Zephyrhills, Florida.
