Auto-Captions in Kaltura

September 11, 2023

As of this month, all new videos created and uploaded in Kaltura will have automatically generated captions. This is a great first step in increasing the accessibility of your video content for all of your learners. All students can benefit from having captions available to clarify vocabulary and expand their opportunities for engaging with video content.

Correct Generated Captions

While any captions are better than no captions, you will want to edit the automatically generated captions to make sure they represent your words correctly. Pay specific attention to discipline-specific vocabulary and key terms. Kaltura also likes to add in periods whenever the speaker pauses, so some basic editing for grammar and spelling will also help people follow your captioning.

To edit your captions, click on Edit from the Actions menu. Choose the Captions tab, and then click the Edit Captions button. You can make changes in the captions connected to each time stamp. Then be sure to Save. We’ve created a tutorial video for you on the specifics of how to edit your captions.

Request Captions for Older Videos

For videos that were created before the semester began, you may need to request captions be generated for them.

Select the video, and click + Caption & Enrich from the Actions menu. You can leave all the default settings, and click Submit. It usually takes a little time for the captions to process. Then follow the same procedure to correct the captions. This recorded training on Kaltura Basics II demonstrates how to request captions, starting at 18:25.

Relink Ensemble Videos

If you still have links to your video content that go through Ensemble, now is the time to change out those links! Not only will linking them through Kaltura enable the captions, but Ensemble itself will be going away at the end of the Fall semester. Any links that go to Ensemble rather than Kaltura will no longer work. Here is a quick video showing you how to replace Ensemble video links with the correct ones through Kaltura.

Even better, take this opportunity to update your video content and create new videos in Kaltura! Learn more about best practices for instructional videos.
