Clemson Online’s Director of Texts and Technologies Awarded Fellowship for Open Educational Resources Research

October 5, 2015

Jonathan Lashley, Clemson Online’s Director of Texts and Technologies, is the recipient of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Open Educational Resources Fellowship. The fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the foundation and the Open Education Group.

The fellowship was created to support “early-career researchers” or qualified master’s or doctoral students who are pursuing research in open educational resources (OERs) — open-source materials made and distributed to facilitate learning. Lashley, a current doctoral student in Clemson’s new Learning Sciences program, is both. His work at Clemson Online includes leveraging the roles technology and media can play in advancing educational opportunities, and his doctoral research focuses largely on the production, implementation, and tracking of effective OERs.

Lashley will represent Clemson at the Open Education Conference this November in Vancouver, British Columbia, as a part of his fellowship award. Additionally, Lashley will receive mentoring and assistance toward his OER research, travel and accommodation for two open-education conferences, and a stipend to support publication of his written work.

As an OER researcher and advocate, Lashley looks forward to the opportunities provided by the highly competitive fellowship. “The U.S. Department of Education’s recent appointment of an open-education advisor is an exciting step toward the democratization of knowledge in this country,” said Lashley. “The sea change in education toward open education makes this opportunity incredibly timely, and I hope to use the fellowship to affect Clemson’s prominent role in OER development going forward.”

The Open Education Group is an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to the growing field of OER and its adoption. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is one of the nation’s largest philanthropic organizations, with a diverse range of programming that includes improving educational access for all students.
