Research Note – Making the Online Classroom Feel like a “Classroom”

October 13, 2015

In Teaching, Theology, and Religion, Michael Strickland, from Amridge University offers a great assignment that instructors can use to enhance the “classroom” feel in their online courses. This is a really creative strategy for discussion forums, and involves the following:

  • Instructors select 3-4 readings related to an upcoming class lecture and assign them students.
  • The instructor then designates a time for a live-video chat where students can discuss these readings.
  • After the chat, students can then post their comments in the discussion forum to meet the assignment requirements.

Strickland notes that using this strategy has resulted in an increase in attendance of the live-video streams of grow from less than 25% to 50%. Strickland notes that the assignment increases camaraderie and as it increases their interaction with the instructor and one another. Additionally, students are able to avoid the temptation to delay posting in discussion forums without really reviewing the material.

Strickland indicates that the live video sessions are recorded and made available for all students, so those who cannot attend can have access to the discussion notes.

This is one example of bringing creativity into the online classroom. Let us know if you have any other ideas!
