Spring 2024 Quality Matters Certified Courses

April 9, 2024

Clemson Online is excited to share that two more courses are now Quality Matters Certified: Methods of Teaching at the Middle and Secondary Level (ED 8030), taught by Anna Morrison, Ed.D., and Geographic Information Systems for Natural Resources (WFB 6340), taught by Lillie Langlois, Ph.D.

Quality Matters is the leading organization in effective online course design. The review is based on the QM rubric, evaluating if the course meets the expectations outlined including: learning objectives, assessments, learning activities, and accessibility. The review process is comprehensive and collaborative based upon decades of research into best practices.  Quality Matters requirements are first reviewed by Clemson Online and then sent out for official review. Both courses were reviewed internally by Digital Learning Strategist James Butler and Digital Learning Manager Sharyn Emery, Ph.D., and will be listed in the Quality Matters directory of certified courses.

Morrison notes,

“This has been a really powerful process, from the internal review with Clemson Online to this external review. I’m very proud that this course passed the external review process. I intend to use the detailed feedback I received to continue improving this course for my future students. The details provided in each of the ‘suggestions’ sections during the internal review and this external review have been crucial to my professional development. As someone who teaches 100% online, it is incredible to have a pathway to receive constructive feedback on my teaching practices.”

Reflecting on her review, Langlois says,

“I’m so pleased to have one course through both the internal and external review. It shows that through education and lots of effort, even difficult subjects like GIS [Geographic Information Systems] can be successfully taught online. Working through the QM certification process helped me better design my online courses with greater clarity and effectiveness.”

You can now submit QM reviews as evidence of effective teaching in the Faculty Success Annual Reporting system through the Office of Academic Affairs. To inquire how your QM certification will be recognized, consult your individual department.
