From the Archives: Organizing Course Modules

Modules in Canvas will help with intentional planning and easy course navigation for any online or hybrid class. They provide your classroom with an organized pathway for students to follow from start to finish. Modules should be the place learners can go to find course content, assignments, and any extra information they need to complete the course.

Your modules could be split up by chapter, by every three chapters, by exams, etc. Consider including a Getting Started module with all the introduction materials such as the syllabus, course requirements, resources, and any other preliminary information to help your students get ready for your course.

Within each of your modules, add text headings to each section so students know what content is contained under each section – perhaps an overview, resources, and assignments. Or, your modules might be split into several parts or subsections. To add a module header, click the plus button like you would for adding any other content. Then click the drop down menu; select “Text Header” and type out the header. The content within the modules should be labeled as well. Assignments, readings, and powerpoint should be clearly labeled so students do not have to guess where to click to find the materials they need.

You can use indentation within modules to group content together. Click the snowman (or the three stacked dots) and click “increase indentation” to do this. Indentation would be useful when an assignment has supplemental materials like readings, or videos. It is just another tool to provide extra visual organization as learners move through the course.

There are many different ways to consolidate a course into modules, so be intentional and leave an ample amount of time to plan out what will work best for your course. Online courses are made successful by the in depth organization that goes into them, and modules are an incredibly useful tool to help with course organization.
