Designing a Flipped Classroom

Last week, Digital Learning Strategist James Butler presented on how to best design a flipped classroom using Canvas. The recording of that session is now available.

A flipped classroom is a teaching design that rearranges the student-teacher relationship in a classroom. Instead of a lecture style classroom where content is delivered to students in class and they complete supplementary work outside of class, lectures are provided outside of class and time in class is spent actively engaging with material. A flipped classroom has students encounter course material before engaging with the instructor.

Benefits

The benefits of a flipped design is that class time becomes designated to active learning. It provides a place where students can practice material with the support of an instructor. It encourages them to prepare for class and come equipped with questions, which leads to student empowerment and higher order cognitive learning.  A flipped classroom allows for student and instructor flexibility. There are many permutations of how to incorporate aspects of a flipped classroom without the entire course design being flipped. For the purpose of this blog we will be speaking about how to use Canvas to structure a fully flipped classroom.

Structure

A flipped classroom requires intentional planning and an appropriate amount of time to build to be successful. When it comes to structuring a flipped classroom, reflect on the activities that may have been rushed because of lack of class time. You will need to anticipate what content students would need to know beforehand to be successful in class, what kind of practice will be completed in class, and how you will bridge the out-of-class and in-class content.

Activities are one aspect of course structure that will happen in and out of class. A few examples of in-class activities are group discussions of readings, challenge questions, note sharing, and concept mapping. Activities that could foster interactive learning online are reading, viewing lecture videos created through Kaltura, knowledge checks, or outside research. Assessments in a flipped classroom design are best kept in Canvas as well. Create weekly timelines to give your flipped classroom additional structure.

Utilizing Canvas for Structure

Canvas should be the backbone that allows your flipped classroom to be  completely centralized and successful. Canvas provides communication solutions and creates the design and organization in your course. Provide an Introduction page that lays out the structure of the course, where they need to go to find information, and course expectations. Canvas announcements will be the best tool to use to communicate quickly about changes to class time or the course. Utilize modules in an organized way that flows through the progression of the course. Use the headings feature in modules to provide this organization and embed materials for each section of content in pages within these modules. If you use lecture videos in Kaltura, make sure to build them into these module pages and add text for additional context.

Use the navigation bar in a clear way. Only allow the buttons with content in them to appear on students’ Canvas pages. Assignments and quizzes can be embedded into modules as well. Students will be able to upload and download assignment or assessment material through Canvas, simplifying a flipped classroom. Additionally, you can create discussion boards where students can contribute information from readings you may have assigned outside of class. Talking about these discussion boards in class would be a way to incorporate active engagement and discussion in the classroom.

Canvas makes designing a flipped classroom easy. Canvas tools can assist you to make smooth transitions between in class and outside of class material. As the instructor, plan ahead and begin organizing in Canvas to ensure best practices when teaching a flipped classroom designed course.
