Where are the people? Integrating sociotechnical context as a technique towards inclusion
Engineering codes of ethics and ABET accreditation place an emphasis on societal contexts and public welfare, yet engineering problems are often presented as abstract and rarely feature people. Traditional engineering curricula are doing students a disservice by leaving graduates to make the hard connections for themselves in the workplace or neglect the impact
their work has on society altogether. Building social issues into and around the technical concepts that we teach can serve as an entry point for our engineering graduates to gain the tools they need to critically consider the impact of their decisions on people and society. In this talk, Dr. Diana Chen presents guiding questions and examples from her own teaching that can help engineering educators begin to incorporate sociotechnical context in
engineering curricula as a steppingstone towards justice and inclusion and to lead students to become engineers engaged with the world around them.

Diana A. Chen, PhD, is an Associate Professor and one of the founding faculty members of Integrated Engineering at the University of San Diego. Dr. Chen is working with colleagues to design an engineering curriculum to educate changemakers who understand that engineering is
an inherently sociotechnical activity. Her passion is studying and encouraging culture change in
engineering curricula and spaces to shift engineering to be a field more inclusive of diversity in all forms. Her scholarly interests include engineering education that contextualizes engineering sciences and design, exploring inclusive pedagogy and equity in engineering, and sustainability
and bio-inspired design in the built environment. She earned her BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and MS and PhD in Civil Engineering with an ESED Certificate from Clemson University.
