Highway 93 / College Avenue Intersection Closure July 25

Barring additional weather delays, Highway 93 is expected to be open on Monday, August 13.

The intersection of Highway 93 and College Avenue will completely close on Wednesday, July 25 and reopen on August 10. Two-lane, two-way traffic along 93 between Cherry Street and Sherman Street will reopen at this time. The date for this closure is subject to possible delays in ongoing construction—communication outlets, including this blog, will be updated on Monday, July 23 if construction delays require the closure to be postponed.

Highway 93 July 14-22 Closure

Highway 93 from Cherry Road to Sherman Street will close completely on Saturday, July 14 at 5 am.  This section of 93 will remain closed until July 22nd. A one lane road will remain open between Sherman Street and College Avenue during this time. Flaggers will be present 24 hours a day to allow access to Sherman Street from College Avenue for construction and residential traffic.

No thru-traffic will be allowed.

Hwy 93 Closed from Sherman to Cherry on July 5

A significant section of Highway 93 will be closed to traffic on Thursday, July 5, from 9:00 PM until 6:00 AM the following day. The closure will span from the intersection with Sherman Street to the intersection with Cherry Road. The closure is necessary in order to tie new chill water lines from 93 to the College of Business as well as the Alumni Center. During this time, contractor A West will have flaggers at College Avenue and Sherman Street in order to turn that part of the highway into a two-way road.

Barriers to Block Access to College Avenue from Hwy 93 starting July 1

Due to the difficulties and safety concerns that arose on Sunday, June 24 with attempting to prep barricades and fencing in advance of closing additional street access, the next barricade extension will take place on Sunday, July 1 while traffic is lightest.  The road construction traffic barriers will be extended through the College Avenue intersection.  Once the barriers have been relocated, traffic will not be able to reach College Avenue from Highway 93 traveling eastbound.

Access to Sherman Street And College Avenue from Highway 93 will be “one-way in” traveling from the Cherry Road intersection and “one-way out” traveling towards the Williamson road intersection.

Traffic flowing from College Avenue will still be able to turn right onto Highway 93, but large trucks may have more difficulty making the turn due to the reduced opening onto 93.

The traffic barricade located near College Avenue will be relocated to the entrance to Mell Hall starting on July 1.

Traffic Barriers to be Extended to College Avenue Starting June 25

Below are several updates to the Highway 93 construction schedule.

Barriers Extended to College Avenue

Road construction traffic barriers are going to be extended on Monday, June 25, to the College Avenue intersection. Traffic along Highway 93 will be one-way only from Cherry Road to College Avenue. At this time, traffic will no longer be able to travel towards Sherman Street from the College Avenue intersection. Access to Sherman from 93 will be “one-way in” traveling from the Cherry Road intersection and “one-way out” traveling towards the College Avenue intersection.

Barriers to be Extended Beyond College Avenue

Road construction traffic barriers are going to be extended on Monday, July 2, to beyond College Avenue intersection. At this time, traffic will not be able to get to College Avenue from Highway 93 North bound. Access to Sherman Street and College Avenue from 93 will be “one-way in” traveling from the Cherry Road intersection and “one-way out” traveling towards the Williamson road intersection.

The current location of traffic barricades on Highway 93 will be moved to College Avenue on June 25, and moved once again to the entrance of Mell Hall on July 2.

Highway 93 Closed Completely between Cherry Road and Sherman Street

There will be two nights between 10 pm and 6 am when Highway 93 will be closed completely to allow utilities to be installed across the road. These dates are still to be determined and will be announced several days before closure.

E-11 Parking Lot

As work extends beyond the Mell Hall (E-11) parking lot entrance, access to the parking lot will be left in, left out only. As utilities are crossing the entrance to the parking lot, the lot will have to be closed for one to two days. Dates for this crossing are still to be determined as construction gets closer to this crossing.

College Avenue Access to Highway 93

We are still on schedule and planning to block access to Highway 93 from College Avenue the second half of July.

Douthit Hills Update

The Douthit Hills construction project is rapidly approaching completion.  Douthit Hills East is currently housing students enrolled in summer classes, and Douthit Hills West will open in June.  The Hub, which features a recreation center, retail and residential dining options, CUPD offices, and the new Barnes & Noble bookstore, will open in early August.

The project will complete as a LEED Silver rated complex in accordance with Clemson’s ongoing efforts to grow into a greener campus. For more information on what it means to be a LEED rated project, see the U.S. Green Building Council’s website here: https://new.usgbc.org/leed

Highway 93 to be reduced to one lane beginning May 12

As construction continues on Highway 93 to upgrade the electrical infrastructure and chilled water lines, workers will shift the barricades that are currently on the road to close an additional lane. As a result, only one lane of travel from Cherry Road to Sherman Road (heading westbound toward Seneca) will be available from Saturday, May 12 to Sunday, August 12. Drivers should expect intermittent shifts in the roadway and are asked to watch for the road signs that signal the shift.

As construction progresses, this closure will be expanded further along 93, past Sherman Road.

The Sikes Hall parking lot will be inaccessible for those entering Calhoun Drive from 93. However, Parkway can still be reached by entering Calhoun from Fort Hill St. or Fernow St.

Updates on the speed of construction will be posted weekly if not daily to this blog. Timeframes are subject to change based on weather and logistics.

Lane closures on Highway 93 beginning April 16

04/20/2016 Update:  Weather permitting, additional barricades will be placed on Highway 93 on Sunday, April 22 to prepare for lane shifting to begin later in the week. Traffic patterns should not be impacted while the equipment is being installed. Anticipated timing of additional lane closures if Monday, April 23.

Clemson University has seen quite a bit of growth over the past few years with several newly constructed buildings on the main campus. However, our electrical and chilled water infrastructure dates back to the 1960’s. To support new construction and renovation, significant upgrades must be made. Unfortunately, this will require disruptions to the flow of traffic along Highway 93 while construction is underway.

Impact to traffic

On April 16, contractors will place barricades along Highway 93 to affect traffic flow, creating safe zones for construction workers. Barricades will be positioned along Cherry Road at Parkway Drive, continue north to Highway 93, and west along Highway 93 to Sherman Drive.

The traffic lane closures and shifts indicated will remain in effect from April 16 to May 12. As manholes are installed to access utilities below the ground, there will be additional lane closures. Traffic lanes around the manhole sites will be reduced during the installation period. Flagmen will be present during in the area to direct two-way traffic.

Going forward

Additional closures will occur after May 12 for the next segment of construction (Learn more here). Detailed traffic-pattern changes will be posted in this blog in advance.

Through-traffic should use Perimeter Road or Highway 123 for the duration of this project. The visuals below provide an overview of where lanes will shift from four lanes to three lanes and, in some cases, two lanes.

Stop Sign and Crosswalk at Calhoun/Parkway Intersection to be Removed

In anticipation of upcoming construction along Highway 93, a protected left-turn arrow has been installed for traffic flowing westbound from Highway 93 onto Calhoun Drive. The signal will be activated on April 16 and will require changes to the intersection of Calhoun and Parkway Drive which will affect both vehicles and pedestrians.

Stop Sign and Crosswalk will be Permanently Removed

To prevent traffic from stacking into Highway 93, per direction from our traffic engineer, University Facilities is removing the stop sign for west bound traffic at the Calhoun/Parkway intersection. The adjacent Calhoun crosswalk will also be removed.  The other stop signs and crosswalks at this intersection will remain, amounting to a 3-way stop that yields to traffic coming from Highway 93.

Crossing Guards to Aid Pedestrians

Crossing Guards will be posted at the intersection to provide directions for foot traffic and aid pedestrians in safely crossing Calhoun and Parkway Drive.  Please see the visual below for an overview.
