Sikes Hall Parking Outages

Select parking spaces surrounding Sikes Hall will be closed for utility construction from May through June 2018. The below map gives a general overview of the parking outages, which will be implemented in phases, as well as the dates that parking spaces will be closed. Updates will be posted as construction progresses.

Map overview of outages

Currently, 14 parking spaces on the east side of the Sikes Hall lot are closed off for chilled water installation. These spots will be unavailable through May 12. Starting May 12, a total of 25 spots will be sectioned off to allow sewerbore installation, with 13 (indicated by light-blue on the map) expected to be reopened after a week. The remaining 12 spaces will remain closed until the end of May. From June 1 through 22, the installation of storm drains will close 35 parking spaces, including the entire west parking lot by Sikes (24 spaces in total) and 11 of the parallel spaces on Calhoun Drive, closest to Sikes.

All planned dates are the best current approximations and are subject to change due to unforeseen conditions and weather. During construction, access to the parking meter kiosk to the south of Sikes Hall will be maintained, and closed areas will be fenced off with a chain link fence.

Lane closures on Highway 93 beginning April 16

04/20/2016 Update:  Weather permitting, additional barricades will be placed on Highway 93 on Sunday, April 22 to prepare for lane shifting to begin later in the week. Traffic patterns should not be impacted while the equipment is being installed. Anticipated timing of additional lane closures if Monday, April 23.

Clemson University has seen quite a bit of growth over the past few years with several newly constructed buildings on the main campus. However, our electrical and chilled water infrastructure dates back to the 1960’s. To support new construction and renovation, significant upgrades must be made. Unfortunately, this will require disruptions to the flow of traffic along Highway 93 while construction is underway.

Impact to traffic

On April 16, contractors will place barricades along Highway 93 to affect traffic flow, creating safe zones for construction workers. Barricades will be positioned along Cherry Road at Parkway Drive, continue north to Highway 93, and west along Highway 93 to Sherman Drive.

The traffic lane closures and shifts indicated will remain in effect from April 16 to May 12. As manholes are installed to access utilities below the ground, there will be additional lane closures. Traffic lanes around the manhole sites will be reduced during the installation period. Flagmen will be present during in the area to direct two-way traffic.

Going forward

Additional closures will occur after May 12 for the next segment of construction (Learn more here). Detailed traffic-pattern changes will be posted in this blog in advance.

Through-traffic should use Perimeter Road or Highway 123 for the duration of this project. The visuals below provide an overview of where lanes will shift from four lanes to three lanes and, in some cases, two lanes.

Stop Sign and Crosswalk at Calhoun/Parkway Intersection to be Removed

In anticipation of upcoming construction along Highway 93, a protected left-turn arrow has been installed for traffic flowing westbound from Highway 93 onto Calhoun Drive. The signal will be activated on April 16 and will require changes to the intersection of Calhoun and Parkway Drive which will affect both vehicles and pedestrians.

Stop Sign and Crosswalk will be Permanently Removed

To prevent traffic from stacking into Highway 93, per direction from our traffic engineer, University Facilities is removing the stop sign for west bound traffic at the Calhoun/Parkway intersection. The adjacent Calhoun crosswalk will also be removed.  The other stop signs and crosswalks at this intersection will remain, amounting to a 3-way stop that yields to traffic coming from Highway 93.

Crossing Guards to Aid Pedestrians

Crossing Guards will be posted at the intersection to provide directions for foot traffic and aid pedestrians in safely crossing Calhoun and Parkway Drive.  Please see the visual below for an overview.

Parking disruption near Sikes Hall and Long Hall

This visual shows what spaces will be unavailable.
Click to enlarge the visual above to see what spaces are unavailable during this time.

Selected spaces in the parking lot between Sikes Hall and Long Hall will be unavailable from March 26 through May 12.  The disruption affects 14 spaces and is necessary to allow for chilled water construction.

A chain link fence will be installed around the parking area for your safety.

Contact Jarred Fleming with any questions.

Hwy 93 Walter T. Cox Boulevard Lane Closures

Beginning April 15, selected lanes of Walter T. Cox Boulevard (Highway 93) will be closed for utility construction that will last through the summer.

While much of Clemson’s main campus is seeing improvements from the ground up, its underground utility infrastructure dates back to the 1960s.

Workers will close portions of the road in segments while they upgrade the electrical infrastructure and chilled water lines for increased reliability to campus and to serve current and future campus utility demands. You can find the full details of this announcement at Inside Clemson.

Hwy 93 Lane Closure near Sherman St. Mar. 20-22 (Updated)

Visual of lane closure work area.
Approximate location of work.

Update: Due to a weather delay the closure will span into Friday in order to pave the area where the utility tie-in was installed.

A small section of the westbound lane of Highway 93 near Sherman Street will be closed for 3 days in order to establish a utility tie-in for the new College of Business. Construction will occur only during daytime hours, with all lanes open during the evening. The closure will span from Tuesday, March 20th until Thursday, March 22nd.

If you have any questions about this work, please contact Paul Borick.

Community Outreach Presentation Info

A presentation was recently given during a community outreach meeting detailing the upcoming construction work to begin in March of this year. The discussion included impacts to traffic flow, pedestrian safety, transit routing, and approximate timelines for completion of work.

The upcoming construction work on Highway 93 will cause lane restrictions between Centennial Boulevard and Cherry Road.  Early warning message signs will be posted to encourage drivers to take alternate routes to lessen delays along 93.

If you have questions about this project, please contact Tony Putnam or Bret McCarley.

Calhoun Drive/Fort Hill intersection closed for paving Feb. 24

The intersection of Fort Hill and Calhoun Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 to allow workers to pave the roadway and perform associated road construction. The paving will take place from Fort Hill intersection along Calhoun Drive to Olin Hall.

Calhoun Drive will remain closed from the south side of the Fort Hill intersection to Olin Hall to complete chilled water taps to Olin Hall and Hardin Hall.  This section of road is expected to open on schedule on March 5.

Feb. 22 meeting to outline Hwy. 93 construction closures

Clemson’s Utilities Department will upgrade the electrical infrastructure and chilled water lines for increased reliability to campus and to serve current and future campus utility demands. The first phase of this work will begin March 2018 and will include the installation of underground electrical duct banks and utility water lines within Walter T. Cox Blvd (Hwy. 93) from Cherry Rd. to Centennial Blvd. Roadway disruptions, including periodic partial and full lane closures, will be encountered but phased to avoid major campus events such as move-in weekends, graduation and fall football season.

A campus information meeting will be held for students, staff and faculty from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 in the McKissick Theatre at the Hendrix Center. Please join us to learn more about the project, impacts to traffic flow along the construction route, parking and Tiger Transit impacts and alternate CAT Bus routes and stops during construction.
