Using Analytics to Support Learners

How do you know when to offer support to your learners? We pick up on behaviors that indicate a learner is “dropping off” in the course. These might include not participating in activities or discussions, not attending class, not turning in assignments, etc. Both Canvas and Kaltura have analytics features that can help you more effectively track learners’ progress and engagement so you can intervene before it’s too late.

Canvas New Analytics

Canvas New Analytics is especially useful for getting a broad picture of who is participating in your class or not. It can be accessed in the Homepage Sidebar, usually on the right-hand side of the Home page of your Canvas course site. Canvas New Analytics can show you the following:

Course grades for all assignment types in the course with an option to select specific assignment types.
Weekly online activity with graphs to show which pages, assignments, activities, etc. students interact with the most.
Breakdowns of each student’s grades, on-time percentage, when they last participated, when their last page view was, how many page views they have accumulated, and how many participations they have accumulated.

All of these pages can be exported into a CSV file. You can also add additional course sections to each of these pages as you view them, using a drop-down menu.

Kaltura Analytics

Kaltura video analytics can provide deeper information regarding your recorded content in your Canvas course. Click on My Kaltura in the global nav menu, choose a video, and select the miniature bar graph on the right-hand side of the screen. For any particular video, you can see the following information:

The impressions (the number of times a video has been seen but not necessarily played), plays, unique viewers, and the average completion rate.
You can easily see each learner’s number of impressions, plays, average completion rate, and total completion rate.
Where your Kaltura videos are being viewed, both internationally and in the United States, as well as what type of device your learners are using to view your content.

You can manipulate the date ranges for this information as well as export a number of CSV files.

What to do

Using Canvas inbox, you can quickly email learners who meet parameters that you set. For example, if you want to email all students who did not participate in the introductory discussion board, you can select to only message students who are missing that assignment.

When you do reach out, offer a warm and understanding tone, a simple yet clear message, and links to learner support such as the Advocacy & Success Student Resources webpage.
