Presenter: E. Walker Massey, Digital Accessibility Specialist
CCIT Internal Operations

Abstract: A disability is any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the person
with the condition to do certain activities and interact with the world around them. One in four adult
Americans and one in three South Carolinians have a disability. When we produce and distribute
inadequate digital resources and communication, we can hinder people from effectively interacting with
the world around them.
However, digital accessibility is the inclusive design and development of digital content and technology
so that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate and interact effectively. Standardized
accessibility concepts guide the author as they apply techniques to familiar authoring tools and create
accessible content. Producing digitally accessible websites, applications, software, and electronic
documents helps ensure access to information and services regardless of disability.
Accessible technology benefits everyone but can be critical for people with disabilities. Whether
purchasing software, building a web page or authoring an electronic document, keep accessibility in
mind.
Bio: Walker worked as a graphic designer in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences for 17
years before joining CCIT’s new Digital Accessibility Team in Fall 2023. She brings decades of extensive
document design experience, brand familiarity and a network of campus wide relationships to her new
role as Clemson’s Digital Accessibility Specialist. In this role, she coaches and encourages students and
employees on inclusive document design, from meeting agendas to marketing materials, coursework or
publications. Walker enjoys teaching in large groups or sitting with individuals to review their
documents. When she is not keeping up with evolving technology, she tries to keep up with her cheerful,
active grandson.
