Hunter Safety

According to SCDNR, the four leading causes of hunting incidents are failing to identify their target, firearm safety violations, lack of control or practice with a firearm, and mechanical failure of the firearm. Following the four rules of gun safety can greatly minimize these incidents.

The four rules of gun safety are:
1. Treat all guns as if they are loaded
2. Keep all guns pointed in a safe direction
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
4. Know your target and what is beyond it

To prevent mechanical failure, you should clean your firearm regularly. Other safe practices include carrying a first ait dit and wearing hunter orange while hunting. Wearing hunter orange allows other hunters to identify you and not mistake you for game. It is also important that any dogs you are hunting with should also wear hunter orange.

Finally, make sure that you abide by all state and federal laws while hunting.
