ATV Safety Basics

  • DOT‐complainant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over‐the‐ankle boots, and gloves
  • Never ride on the paved road except to cross when safe and permitted by law
  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs
  • Never carry passengers on a single‐rider ATV
  • Ride an age‐appropriate ATV
  • Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys
  • Ride only on designed trails and at safe speeds

UTV Safety Basics

  • Always keep legs and arms inside the vehicle
  • Drive slow and turn smooth to avoid overturn
  • Do not turn the vehicle in mid‐slope because of the increased risk of overturn
  • Use appropriate speed on rough terrain
  • Each passenger must ride in his/her seat
  • Do not haul passengers in the cargo area
  • Passengers must be tall enough to reach handhold while their backs are against the seat and feet are flat on floorboards
  • Be cautious backing up because of pedestrians
  • Ensure cargo/hauled materials are properly secured with attention to the center of gravity.

Animal Safety

Many people do not consider livestock a threat; however, every year, many people are injured or killed by livestock. It is important to always respect the livestock and to understand they can pose many threats to humans.

Safety Reminders for Handling Livestock

  • Keep work areas clean not only for yourself but also for the livestock.
  • Always be respectful of the animals. Often they do not intend to hurt you, but their size can pose a threat.
  • Keep children away from livestock while working with it.
  • Always leave yourself a way out when working in close quarters with livestock.
  • When working with a mother and her young, be extra careful. Often mothers can become very protective of their young, which could result in injury to themselves or others.
  • Stay clear of animals that are frightened or spooked. Often these animals will act out of fear and could injure you.
  • When approaching livestock, always ensure they know that you are there. Never approach an animal in its blind spot.
