Colleton County 4-H Members Compete in SC 4-H Horse Show

Dawn Stuckey, 4-H Youth Development Agent

SC 4-H continues to impact Colleton County youth using the “learn by doing” approach developed in 1924. The organization’s motto, “To Make the Best Better,” is demonstrated across the state as members use what they have learned from a network of 4-H agents and volunteers to positively impact their lives and communities. Members of the Blue Ribbon Riders 4-H Club and Palmetto Pony 4-H Club have worked with their trainers and club leaders to make their best better to compete in the State 4-H Horse Show at the T. Ed Garrison Arena in Clemson, SC. Addison Hiers, Brooklyn Legette, Eleanor Jiles, Aubree Spencer, Cadence Stone, Aurora Tecca, and Meranda Yancey competed in various horsemanship classes during the event. Hiers riding Dolly earned Reserve Grand Champion in Ranch. She competed with riders from across the state to earn top honors in the class.

Aubree Spencer, Eleanor Jiles, and Aurora Tecca all placed 1st in Hunter/Cloverbud Walk/Trot/ Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter/Cloverbud Walk/Trot Equitation, Speed/Cloverbud Walk/Trot Pole Bending, Cloverbud Western Walk/Trot, Cloverbud Western Showmanship.  Jiles and Tecca also placed 1st in Cloverbud Western Showmanship. Addison Hiers placed 3rd in Junior Ranch Ground Handling and Junior Ranch Riding, 6th in Junior Versatility, 5th in Junior Western Trail, and 1st in Junior Ranch Trail. Meranda Yancey placed 8th in Speed/Junior Stakes Race and 5th in Speed/Junior Key Hole. Brooklyn Legette placed 8th in Speed/Junior Barrel Race, 9th in Speed/Junior Key Hole, 9th in Junior Western Showmanship, 8th in Junior Western Showmanship, and 1st in Junior/Senior Western Riding.

In addition to her win, Hiers and Brooklyn Legette, another rider for Colleton 4-H, scored high enough in their respective classes to earn places at the Southern Regional Horse Show held in Perry, Georgia, later this summer. The Colleton County 4-H program wishes the girls well as they continue to pursue their goals of excellence. If you would like to donate to support the girl’s travel and registration expenses, please contact Dawn Stuckey, County 4-H Youth Development Agent, at dstucke@clemson.edu or call 843-739-1003.
