Beaufort County 4-H Junior Master Gardener Program

Meghan Barkley 4-H Youth Development Agent

Beaufort County 4-H is partnering with Coosa Elementary on Lady’s Island to offer the third class of Junior Master Gardeners.  This program was initiated after 35 staff and teachers took the Clemson Extension School & Community Garden online course. Extension staff wanted to keep the teachers and students engaged in gardening activities and be set up for success after their team completed the course.

The program starts in September and concludes in April.  Students participate in an hour-long monthly session as part of their school day.  After completing the program, students are recognized with a graduation ceremony in May. Students learn about soils, plant growth & development, ecology, beneficial insects, nutrition, gardening careers, and much more. Volunteers Eileen McHenry and Bradley Smith have helped make this program possible.  Mr. Brad teaches youth a new song each month, and graduates receive a songbook after concluding the program.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service developed Junior Master Gardener, a hands-on program that promotes interest in gardening, develops an appreciation for the environment, and cultivates the mind.  More information can be found here: https://jmgkids.us/
