Derrick Phinney, Natural Resources Program Director Dorchester County

Derrick Phinney is the Natural Resources Program Director for Clemson Cooperative Extension providing statewide programmatic leadership to extension agents working in forestry, wildlife, and water. He received both a B.S and M.S in Forest Management from Clemson University and is a registered forester. Derrick’s experience is working in land management and environmental regulations since 1998. He has worked with landowners on establishing objectives, writing and implementation of management plans, timber sales, reforestation, prescribed burning, cost-share programs, GPS, GIS mapping, and endangered species assessments. He has a vast background in freshwater wetlands and critical area determination and verification, restoration of freshwater wetlands and critical areas, environmental permitting, and stormwater monitoring. He has begun to work closely within the biomass sector and in regards to the use of wood pellets for energy production. The urban forestry market and interest have been growing over the last several years and his understanding and background have been increasing due to the new interest in our urban forest.
