A Slice of Summer

Akendra Garrett, EFNEP Agent – Berkeley and    Charleston Counties

As we embrace the warmth of summer, with hotter temperatures and longer days, it is an excellent opportunity to work toward our health and well-being goals. Going outside for outdoor activities and fun-filled adventures is always wonderful. I want to share a few pointers with you as we make the most of our summer.

  1. Stay hydrated. Drink water and other refreshing beverages.
  •  Buy fresh produce. During the peak of the season, local grocery stores and farmers’ markets offer the best selections.
  • Take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather by taking a brisk walk, evening stroll, bike ride, or other physical activities.
  • Prepare enjoyable, quick, and simple meals for the entire family.  Grilling is a great way to have quick and flavorful meals.
  • Remain calm, unwind, and follow a healthy sleep regimen. Remember that getting enough sleep is essential for overall health and well-being.

While some people enjoy traveling, hanging out with friends and family, or taking in the beauty of the outdoors, it’s essential to set realistic goals in order to keep a healthy balance. Summer is an excellent time to reach your summertime goals while having fun in the sun.
