Meghan Barkley, 4-H Youth Development Agent

Getting an email from a parent that expresses their gratitude towards a child’s experience at a camp is one of the most rewarding parts about being a 4-H youth development agent. The 2024 Beaufort County 4-H cooking camp helped youth feel confident enough in their skills to prepare a meal for the family at home.
14 youth participated in the 4th annual Beaufort County 4-H cooking camp. They made several snacks and more than ten meals. They learned a variety of preparation techniques and kitchen safety. Campers worked in small teams to craft their recipes. Recipes included smoothies, crepes, meatball stroganoff, chicken stir fry, breakfast quesadillas, garlic lemon chicken & asparagus, and homemade hot fudge for ice cream sundaes.
Emily Hansen, UPIC Intern helped prepare the lineup for recipes used at camp this year. Youth and their families received a digital cookbook so that they can recreate recipes at home. It was another great camp, and we are already looking forward to next year!
