Janet Steele, Clemson Cooperative Extension Forestry Agent

The Orangeburg-Calhoun Forest Landowners Association met in person on Thursday, September 30, 2021. The group’s previous meetings had been virtual since the Covid pandemic began in 2020. Mr. Jimmy Guthrie hosted approximately 30 members at his property in Neeses. A large picnic pavilion provided a picturesque location for members to socialize and enjoy a catered dinner before the program began. Carla Castro, Tree Improvement Specialist with the SC Forestry Commission, presented “Remodeling the SCFC Nursery and Tree Improvement Program to Better Serve South Carolina Landowners.” Carla highlighted the methods used to determine the best genetics for various tree species and how this research is applied to growing the improved seedlings available for sale to SC landowners.
