Cool-Season Forages and Legumes Demonstration Plot:

Hillary Pope, County Agent – Allendale County

This past April, County Agent Hillary Pope partnered with South Carolina Forage and Grazing Lands Coalition and hosted a demonstration plot at JCO Farms in Allendale County. The demonstration plot consisted of several varieties of small grains, ryegrass, alfalfa, clovers, and other legumes. Attendees learned about the different types and which ones grew best in the area.

Dr. Liliane Silva, Clemson Forages Specialist and Livestock and Forages Program Team Director, Lee Van Vlake, introduced each variety covering the planting guidelines and how the array can improve soil health. Attendees also learned about planting a 3-part mix of cool-season grass, small grain, and legume to extend their grazing periods.
