Samantha Porzelt, Water Resources Agent for Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties

Water is essential to all life, including the wildlife you may want to attract to your backyard. Natural water sources are uncommon in most backyards, but they can be added through temporary or permanent features. These can be as simple as a shallow dish of water or a bird bath, or as complex as a fountain with a pump and waterfall. Providing clean, reliable sources of water year-round can support a diverse backyard ecosystem, especially during times of drought. Water features can provide you with a relaxing view while also providing bathing and drinking sources for wildlife. Different types of animals use water in various ways, so knowing what type of wildlife you want to attract can determine the size and location of your water source. If you’d like to learn about different ways, you can incorporate water resources into your backyard habitat, check out Clemson Extension’s new Backyard Wildlife Short Course.
