Colleton County 4-H has been busy making the best in Colleton County better. From 4-H Club meetings in the Extension Office to community programs and service projects, Colleton County 4-H is making a difference in the lives of our citizens and animals. Colleton 4-H Club completed its service project with the Colleton County Animal Shelter. Older members socialized with animals in the play yard while younger members made treats for the shelter residents. Ms. Barbara Burgess, FOCCAS volunteer, gave a guided tour of the facility and explained the process of receiving and caring for the animals. One of the most surprising things we learned was that the animals are trained to walk on a leash and respond to a few basic commands while they are in the shelter. If you are considering getting a pet, we recommend you visit the shelter first. You may find your perfect pet waiting for you.
Colleton 4-H Agent, Dawn Stuckey, also worked with local agencies, FFA Chapter, and Extension Agents to provide a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day in April. On April 30, Clemson Extension Agents Marion Barnes, Jonathan Croft, Hillary Pope, Rob Last, SCDNR, Colleton County Fire & Rescue, Colleton County High School FFA, and Colleton County 4-H worked to provide lessons in boating safety, lawn mower safety, chemical safety, animal safety, fire safety, and first aid for youth and families in attendance. Lunch was provided by PRTC and Food Lion for all presenters and participants. Donations were also received from FloraLife, Lowcountry Equipment, Benton’s Feed & Seed, Ruffin Farm Supply, and other individual contributors. Thank you to all of our supporters and participants.
Colleton 4-H Club highlights the 4-H Small Garden Project at the Cottageville Tractor Parade and Farmer’s Market. Members also incorporated arts in the program by providing face painting while families visited the market.
