Know Diabetes by Heart

Michelle Altman, Rural Health Agent-Hampton County

Obesity is defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as an adult who has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above. A BMI of 25-29 is considered medically overweight. To determine your BMI use the CDC’s Body Mass Index calculator:  https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.html

Knowing for yourself and helping others.

Obesity can lead to heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. Clemson Cooperative Extension facilitates a free online class called:  Know Diabetes by Heart. The online course explains the connection between heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. This online program is also for anyone who wants to learn more about diabetes and the steps to take for prevention and self-management. The course takes about an hour.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following: (1) state what diabetes is; (2) explain diabetes’ link to heart disease and stroke; (3) identify ways to take charge of your health to reduce your risk, and (4) join the Know Diabetes By Heart™ initiative.
