Livestock Meeting August 18, 2022

Nicole Correa- Area Livestock and Forage Midlands Agent

The end of hay season brings us to show season here in SC! A few livestock shows are coming up shortly, but I would like to highlight the Orangeburg County Fair Livestock Show and the shows at the State Fair in Columbia. Several Calhoun and Orangeburg participants this year, with many showing poultry. We also have a few children showing hogs at the Orangeburg County Fair on October 7. Let’s get out and show our support for our local 4-H and FFA students involved with livestock! Many people are involved in these events, and we would like to highlight their hard work. Please see the link below for a complete list of shows and details. View Google Document://dochttpss.google.com/document/d/14RE4IU40lnj4w1f4pzTvbtPGRHbhEBf3/edit

Our Orangeburg Cattlemen’s Association has had a couple of great meetings recently, with our next one set for October 27 at 7:00 pm at the Fairgrounds. If you want to join us, please email me at ncorrea@clemson.edu to RSVP. Everyone is welcome, and we would love to see new faces whether you plan to become a member or not. We will also join the Lexington Cattlemen’s Association in November for a joint meeting. We will host that meeting on November 14 at Edisto Pines, and a formal invitation will go out to our lists with full details of the meeting time soon. Edisto Pines offers some great learning opportunities in genetics and embryo transfer, so we are excited to learn more about their operation.

Additional programs/opportunities coming up are a Homesteading Workshop and a Small Ruminant Workshop. The Homesteading Workshop will be a 3-part series with speakers from around the state. It will be held in Lexington, Orangeburg, and Charleston. The Small Ruminant Workshop will be on zoom, allowing us to secure speakers from different areas of the country. Details and announcements for both of these events will be available shortly! As always, if there is anything you need from me as your Livestock and Forages Agent, please don’t hesitate to reach out via phone at (808) 397-9026 or email at ncorrea@clemson.edu
