Shannon Herndon, County Extension 4-H Agent
Vegetable Gardens, Pollinator Gardens and Backyard Gardens are all a part of the Barnwell County 4-H Gardening Program. Four county schools participate in the School Gardening Project. After teachers have completed a six-week online course in the curriculum, they are eligible to receive garden kits and transplants four times a year to keep the raised bed gardens producing and growing. Last summer, three programs were selected for the Bee A Friend to Pollinators online course. Upon completing the course, the programs received grant funds to plant a pollinator garden. This summer, two 4-H’ers are participating in the 4-H Small Garden Project. The youth planted squash, cucumbers and marigolds in their backyard garden plots. Their garden projects will be judged this month, and they will complete a project record book.
