Why Stormwater Pond Management Matters

Stormwater ponds are engineered systems that are critical tools for protecting our communities and waterways.

Stormwater ponds help by:

  • Storing and slowly releasing runoff to reduce flooding
  • Trapping sediment and associated pollutants so cleaner water flows downstream
  • Improving water quality through natural settling and pollutant removal processes
  • Providing community benefits, including wildlife habitat and neighborhood aesthetics

Successful stormwater pond management requires collaboration among various stakeholders, including engineers, regulators, property owners, and community members, to understand how these systems function and to determine the most effective maintenance strategies.
