Sweet Success: How One Charleston Agency Turned Healthy Snacks into Healthy Habits

Akendra Garrett, EFNEP Agent – Berkeley and Charleston Counties

One Charleston community agency demonstrates what can happen when nutrition education meets enthusiasm, consistency, and genuine care. During our Eat Smart, Be Active fruit and vegetable lesson, participants eagerly gather to learn how quick, simple, and delicious healthy eating can be.

From the very first session, the group fully embraced the opportunity to prepare fast and nutritious snacks, something they could enjoy as breakfast, a mid-day energy boost, or even a sweet treat that wouldn’t derail their health goals. What began as a hands-on demonstration quickly evolved into a weekly highlight that participants eagerly anticipated.

The real success came in the weeks that followed. Long after the lesson ended, participants continued to share their feedback, expressing how much they enjoyed the recipe and how surprised they were by its flavor, simplicity, and nutritional value. Even more inspiring, several reported that they have now started making the snack regularly at the center whenever they crave something sweet.

This shift demonstrates more than just appreciation for a fun-filled lesson; it reflects genuine behavioral change. By choosing a wholesome, fruit-filled snack over less nutritious options, participants are taking meaningful steps toward better health and well-being.

This Charleston agency is a shining example of how accessible recipes, supportive learning environments, and consistent encouragement can empower people to build healthier habits. Their continued enthusiasm proves that when individuals feel confident in the kitchen, nutritious choices become natural, rewarding, and sustainable.
