Joe Varn is the Agronomy Agent for Bamberg, Allendale, Barnwell, and Hampton Counties. He started working for the Extension Service in 1988. Joe worked at the Edisto Research and Education Center after receiving his bachelor’s degree. He returned to Clemson University to earn a master’s degree and then started with the Extension Service.
During his time with the Extension Service, Joe has worked in many areas but feels that he has the most knowledge in Peanut Production. Joe is an Agricultural Agent, and his primary duty is to assist all clientele and deliver researched-based information.
Joe’s favorite time of the year with his job is in the fall when it is time to harvest Peanuts. That is the time when he gets out and meets with growers almost every day. He helps to determine when to dig peanuts, and that affects their end-of-the-year profit and loss.
