SHANNON B. HERNDON, COUNTY EXTENSION 4-H AGENT
Ryan, a Barnwell 4-H member participating in the 4-H Small Garden project, wanted to compare the difference in raising plants in-ground versus raised bed gardens. He observed that the plants’ growth from the in-ground was slower compared to the raised bed garden plants. He planted okra, tomato, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, and squash seeds. Eggplants, jalapenos, and sweet potatoes were seedlings.
One of the delicious meals the family enjoyed was an Indian-style eggplant and tomato curry cooked by his grandma from produce grown in the garden.
The 4-H Small Garden Project is an independent-study project for youth ages 5-18 to establish, maintain, and harvest a small garden. Youths set goals and plan activities and strategies to achieve those outcomes. Participants learn record-keeping, financial management, and communication skills. The project runs from April to July.
